1. When Jim says 'That is so weird' after Gaila's expression of love, it looked like she was going to break it off with him right then and there. Uhura's (un)timely arrival, sadly, leaves this to our imaginations. I like to think she did, though.
2. Although she obviously disliked Kirk to a great degree throughout most of the film, she was pretty quick to help him and stand behind him on the bridge with Spock, even though Spock is her boyfriend/lover/significant other. She even presumably helps him out after he's gotten Spock to remove himself from the bridge. Other than her spiteful little comment, she does her job without question. A girl who doesn't put her past grudges in the way of doing what's right? Yes, please!
3. Well, it's pretty much strictly fanon, but we assume that Gaila escaped from being a slave girl to get where she is today. The fact that she escaped, and the fact that she doesn't let her past stop her from doing what she wants (intellectually, sexually, etc.) is damn badass, no matter how you look at it!
I think you took all of the other good points I was thinking of when I started reading. :C Of course, we're only talking STXI!Uhura, here, and she doesn't get the most screen time. And Gaila is only IN STXI, and she gets almost NO screen time. :/
Either way: these are some BAMF bitches. And I mean that in the most respectful, awe-filled way possible.
You raise a really good point about Uhura. She is nothing but professional when she sits in her comm chair. And as to her snide comment, if Bones is allowed to have a line then she can definitely have one. As Bones is boinking Jim, he of all people should have kept quiet.
Bones is a doctor, not a PC enthusiast. Or, uh, up-to-date on the etiquette of How to Talk to the Person You're Boinking When in Public/At Work. LOL
Anyhow, yeah, I really liked that about her. Even when he's having his allergy attack and can hardly talk, and she OBVIOUSLY doesn't like him, she doesn't blow him off or try to help Bones sedate him or whatever. She tries to figure out what he's saying and help him. Oh, Uhura. <3333
