I got some new fishes!
My 4 ft and 6 ft tanks are pretty under-populated with regard to mid-water fishes, but I don't like buying them from shops because of the poor welfare in the supply chain - plus the one remaining shop that sells them in Jersey can't tell a Kissing gourami from a Severum cichlid.
There's a Facebook group for Jersey fish-keepers, and I've been trying to find someone giving away or selling some tetras for ages, but someone always seemed to get in before me.
Not this time! A couple of days ago I went around to some guy's mum's house, where he was catching the tetras he'd promised me from a terrible tank. It was one of these terrible cylindrical fish prisons, about 12 inches in diameter, and the sides of the tank were green with algae. His mum said, "He's been neglecting them a bit." No shit!
He put them all in one small bag - when I got home and put them into their quarantine tank, there were 4 very thin Neon tetras, 8 lovely Black Phantom tetras, and 4 Rasboras, all of them absolutely starving.
The Neons have fattened up nicely and all of them are showing their colours well. One thing I love more than getting new fishes is getting new fishes and giving them a better life.
