I just saw the "Friends" episode called "The One With the Thumb", in which Monica goes out with a guy called Alan. She introduces him to the rest of the gang, and they all love him.
The whole gang: like Jonathan in "Superstar."
Chandler even says, "It's the way he makes me feel about myself."
I've always felt that Xander was partly based on Chandler, and at the end of the Buffy episode, "Superstar", Xander says, "I'll always remember the way he made me feel about me."
At the end of the "Friends" episode, Monica breaks up with Alan, and the whole of the rest of the gang is devastated, exactly like when Jonathan's trick is revealed.
I guess either Joss or Jane Espenson was a big fan of "Friends."
