I'm watching George Tenent on 60 Mins right now.
First off, he defends torture. But if you call it 'torture,' he'll turn red and bluster about how 'these are people that will kill you within 30 seconds of letting them go from whatever facility you have them in and not bat an eyelash.'
Secondly, after screaming and yelling and ranting about various things, he says of the 2003 State of the Union speech (featuring the infamous 16 words that lead us to Iraq): I didn't read it. I farmed it out.
This is a man on the defensive. He's trying to cover his own ass WHILE telling us what we've managed to figure out about the Bush administration. He's trying to make himself seem like he was above the fray, so that his (genuine) argument against the Bush White House will seem legit.
Dude needs to fall on his sword, confess his sins, and wait 5 years until the lecture money starts rolling in.
I think Tenent is full of shit, really. Less full of shit than the President and Co., but I think the truth is, he was manipulated and used, and doesn't want to admit that he was a scapegoat from 9/12/2001 until he resigned in 2004.
I'd honestly believe that his fuck-ups were responsible for 9/11 if it weren't for the Presidential briefing that was famously titled 'Bin Laden determined to attack within the United States,' that was given to Bush in August of 2001. But I believe him when he says he tried to warn the President.
I believe him when he says that he passed on reading the State of the Union speech, I suppose--the infamous 16 words of GWB had been removed from 2 previous speeches--and were, by far, the most explosive words Bush had used--so I'm willing to believe that he assumed most anything in the SotU speech would be fairly innocuous.
But I'm not buying his Cassandra act. OR his Christ act.
