Helmet Head

The other bike.

So I've been thinking more and more seriously about getting involved in the "other bike" thing. You know... the kind that you peddle.

It seems inevitable, considering how many of my closest friends live by the bike. I've even participated in Critical Mass (on the tandem bike from hell, no less), but I've never gone for it the way my nearest and dearest have. What is my main contention?

The helmet.

Yes, I know it is stupid, but I can't stand bike helmets. Motorcycle helmets are a necessary evil and I have no problem wearing a full face, but bike helmets just leave me disgruntled. I think it comes from a childhood of bicycles and the feeling of the wind in my hair. I loved bikes. Loved loved loved them. One summer I discovered that my rollerskates fit over my bicycle peddles and spent four glorious summer months constantly on wheels.

But the prospect of riding a bicycle in Seattle is stupid without the proper gear. So, the first step in my contemplation of "going peddle" has less to do with a bicycle itself, and more to do with a helmet.

Here are a couple that are actually changing my mind:

Phrenology Helmet -- too pricy but oh-so-cool!

Bell Helmets look kinda cool and Yakkay are just hilarious.

Honestly, though, I kinda like this little "ala Wonderbread" number from Nutcase.

Any opinions?
