Yom HaZikaron

May 07, 2008 18:03

Today is Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day for all its citizens who were killed in wars and terrorist attacks. At 11:00 AM, there is a two-minute siren all over the country, and everyone stops what they're doing, and stands at attention. See the following example:

From my living room window, I also have a view where I can see a few heavy-traffic streets, and it looked pretty much the same as that.

I went grocery shopping today in town, and on King George (one of the main roads) the Koby Mandell Foundation had set up a "tent". The walls were pieces of fabric sewn together, squares with pictures and information of children and teenagers who were killed by terrorists.

Koby Mandell lived in Efrat and if he were still alive today, he would be kooshballrivky's age. He was murdered seven years ago one afternoon by Palestinian terrorists while hiking near a town not far from his home. The Koby Mandell Foundations' webpage has a biography of him, which I recommend. After his death, his parents set up The Koby Mandell Foundation in order to help other people who have lost family members due to terrorist attacks.

(That cost ten shekels.)
