Herd mentality

There are 3 ATMs on campus.
2 of them are just outside the bank, which is next to the Student's House, and the 3rd is inside the Student's House, in floor -1.

It's a long established empirical fact that there are at any time 7 people waiting for the ATMs outside for each person waiting for the one inside.

But this isn't what amazed me.

I went to the ATMs today to get some cash.
There were 6 or 7 people waiting in line outside.
All of them waiting in front of the ATM on the right, with nobody using the left one.
I look at it to see if there's an "out of order" message, and see that there isn't any.
I ask one of the people waiting if the machine is out of order, and he says that he doesn't know.
He didn't check.

So I approach the ATM on the left, take out the cash, and leave.
While 6 or 7 people are standing in line in front of the other one.
