Yeah it pissed me off. My mom was saying that the silver team on Biggest Loser were acting like "big loud black ladies" While they technically ARE big, loud, black, and ladies, that doesn't mean those things coorelate. She's said it before too, as if all she can conclude about these women acting like jerks, was that it's because they were acting like "big loud black ladies".
I was like: "You've got to stop indulging in stereotypes! I find it offensive! We all recognize stereotypes sometimes, but the more I hear it, the more I have to check myself not to repeat it out loud. You make the stereotyping worse by reducing these womens behavior to their race. And for the record, I've seen plenty of big loud white women..."
She seemed a little perturbed - as if I were attacking her for something harmless. But that's the point! Stereotypes/racism are perpetuated by harmless reference too! Not JUST gratuitous use of the n-word. You know? That's why we let it slide, and why they don't go away. She argued that it wasn't racism, only a stereotype. Frankly, in this context, it sounds like splitting hairs to me.
That is splitting hairs, and your reaction and reasons are one hundred percent correct. It doesn't go away if you're "just using a stereotype". That kind of thing bothers me sooo much. RAAAGSHRFHAERJGN
That's why I've started to dislike most comedians. Like, Dane Cook. "They were so loud the black people sitting behind them were like SSHHHH!" What? WHAT?! Doesn't help that he bites everyone else's jokes anyways.
