Catching up (and question about tasting gin)

Sep 29, 2011 20:12

Doesn't seem like I've been doing a lot, but have been okay these days.

Spent time w/my sis and have plans for additional activities.

Have gone to a couple of author events. One was very low-key: it was for the second novel by a cousin of my cousins, Julie Otsuka. Her first, When the Emperor was Divine, was a critical success. The new one, " ( Read more... )

I usually keep my gin in the fridge, and drink it straight up. If it's at room temperature, an ice cube or two will cool it down and dilute it a little.

Thanks. I'll definitely keep them in the fridge after opening and I'll likely take at least a few sips at room temp straight up.

I usually have it with grapefruit soda or gingerale, which probably means the very nice stuff would be wasted on me. (Or the very herbal/flavourful stuff anyway. I get Number 10, which certainly isn't plonk, because it's a very smooth mixer.) When I have a bottle of Victoria Gin, I have a little straight first, though, just plain, room temperature or slightly chilled, because it's so delicious.

For your tasting, I highly recommend getting a tiny bowler hat to put on the gin bottles. If the gin is any good at all, this will be HILARIOUS.

The Victoria Gin and other products are very interesting to me - thank you for the link! I have friends who like (Tanqueray) No. Ten, so it's on my list.

And I think the tiny bowler hat is a marvelous idea! I am checking around for those even before the tasting!

I think that particular one came free with the Brokers, which is terrible gin. But I expect some local dollar store has a tiny hat with your name on it. :D

My favorite gin drinks are the gin and tonic with lime, and the Blue Moon--gin, blue curacao and sour mix with a splash of soda. If I was just trying to savor high quality gin flavor, I'd probably have it in a highball with seltzer.

My favorite gin is Tanqueray.

Will you be at OVFF this year? I'm considering bringing a bottle of something special and will consider hints from a connoiseur...

Thanks for the suggestions! I like the idea of the gin w/seltzer for the bubbly.

I won't be at OVFF, so have fun without me! I hesitate to provide hints, though, since I actually liked your hobo jerky. LOL!

There's nothing wrong with tasting straight gin. Drinking it heavily, sure. But tasting is fine ( ... )

Wow - thank you for the wealth of info and suggestions!

Funny you should mention Lillet Blanc. I do like it and just finished a bottle a few days ago when it was hot here (rocks, slice of orange). I enjoy far less sweet cocktails, too.

I'm not at all familiar with good tonic water, though I've seen Q around. Must investigate along w/gins.

Do you have a favorite, good-for-most-occasions gin?
