Barn Hunt "April Showers" trial in Longview

Apr 09, 2017 21:34

Tashi spent this last weekend finding rats in the first Barn Hunt trial where we were NOT running any Master's courses since we achieved this level. Now that the "Crazy 8" game is official, I decided to only run those courses instead of the normal ones. Though Tashi commonly places (in fact frequently wins) those classes, the uncertainty of the number of hides takes some of the fun out of the searching. The new class is just for fun: two minutes of crazy "find as many as you can" type of fun!

Eight rats are hidden (as well as four tubes with only distracting rat litter smells) and the dogs spend most of the time finding as many as they can. They also have to get through a (fairly bendy and dark) tunnel which can be difficult for some dogs since they have to suspend searching in order to complete it within those two minutes.

I watched a good friend of mine actually get all eight of the rats! Her dog is awesome especially because she alerts and then takes off, so time isn't wasted in extracting the prize from the dog!

We actually had two runs where he got seven rats AND found the eighth one within five seconds after the two minute bell! So close! He had so much fun and we wrapped up the first Crazy 8 title this weekend. I love this "low stress" way to compete and still have a terrific time with all the folks I've grown close with over time.

This video cuts off just a fraction of a second before he landed on his eighth tube as I was trying to collect him up after his run. He had terrific fun in this ring!
