It sucks when your predictions about a character color their actual onscreen portrayal. I like Kay. But I see her as either a plant or the love interest that gets killed. Neither one screams "hey, warm up to me as a character".

I think the last scene in the episode was brilliant. The foreshadowing for an epic rivalry is so right THERE.
