Jensen and Jared both shot straight up in bed. Jared already moving towards Carol's room before he untangled himself from the sheets. Jensen caught his boyfriend as he was about to fall and steadied him against the wardrobe before resuming the race to their adopted daughter's room.
When Jared got to the door, what he saw made tears spring to his eyes.
Carol was sat bolt upright, hugging the doll Danneel had given to her, and screaming her lungs out for her deceased mother as tears painted her face.
Jensen moved into the room, Jared a step behind him, and wrapped the little girl in his arms. “Shhhh, Carol, I've got you baby.”
Jared curled his arms around both of them. “We're here, Christmas Carol. Your daddies are here.”
The screams abated, but the tears didn't. “Mommy? I want Mommy. Where's Mommy?”
The men exchanged a look over her head. Jared's eyes watered and he hugged the both of them closer.
“Carol, sweetie, you had a nightmare.” Jensen said. “Your Mommy's gone, honey, she's an angel watching over you, remember? Jared and me, we're your daddies now and we'll take care of you forever. We promise.”
The girl looked up, blue eyes watery, “Mommy... Mommy's gone?” She blinked and curled into Jensen's chest. “Mommy's an angel?”
“Yes, sweetie,” Jared said. “Your Mommy's one of God's angels now. She sent Jensen and me to take care of you from now on.”
“Auntie Dan-kneel and Auntie Lis too?”
Jensen nodded. “Auntie Danneel and Auntie Lis too. Your Papa and I love you and we're going to keep you safe always.”
“Mommy keeped me safe too,” Carol said.
Jared raised his eyebrows at Jensen, who asked, “How did your Mommy keep you safe?”
Carol wiped a hand across her face. “It was really really hot and I couldn't see 'cause it was so light. Mommy couldn't move, but she made me leaf our house so I wouldn't get burnt up like she did.”
Jensen reached out and curled his spare hand in the back of Jared's t-shirt. Reading the words 'Cause of Death: House Fire' in her mother's file didn't have the same punch to the gut that the little girl's words now did.
Jared picked up the four year old and carried her towards his and Jensen's room. Jensen collected her quilt and followed.
Once in their room, Jared settled Carol in between himself and Jensen, who spread her quilt over the child.
“Do you want a story or a lullaby, Christmas Carol?” Jared asked.
Carol looked between her daddies. “Can I have both story and lullaby?”
Jensen nodded and settled herself against his chest, so she could feel the vibrations from his singing. “I see the moon and the moon sees me,” he sang, “down through the leaves of the old oak tree. Please let the moon that shines on me, shine on the one I love,” as he sang the words, he cuddled Carol closer and put a hand out for Jared to take.
“Your mom is one of God's angels and she spends all day flying through the clouds, knowing that you're happy and taken care of,” Jared used his unheld hand to illustrate how the angels move around the clouds. “When you're scared or sad, she hears immediately and hovers over you so you can feel her presence.” Jared pointed to the ceiling. “You can't see her, but your mommy is always with you, and whenever you pray to God, he always passes on the message to her.”
Carol nodded and wiggled against Jensen. “Can I pray now?”
Jensen nodded and gently helped her kneel at the side of the bed, he and Jared getting on their knees at either side of her.
The little girl opened her mouth, then closed it. “How do I pray to God?”
“Like he's a friend,” Jensen answered. “We'll show you.” He bowed his head. “Dear God, please keep my family and my friends safe and happy and healthy. Let my nephews grow up well and bless my brother and sister-in-law as they look after them. Bless Mac and my mom and dad and grandparents. Bless the cast and crew of Supernatural and keep us loving our jobs, so they never feel like work. Bless Danneel and Elisabeth's love, bless Jason's career and keep Steve and Christian out of trouble,” he smiled in the unconscious way he did when he prayed, a peaceful look on his face. “Please bless Jared and me and our precious little girl. Thank you again for the day she came into our lives. We won't waste this miracle you've sent us.” He opened his eyes and nodded at Jared.
“'Sup, God?” Jared began with a grin.
Jensen shook his head fondly and laughed, pleased when Carol smiled as well.
“As always, I want to thank you for my family and my friends and my job. Also for Jensen, who's totally awesome and Carol, who's perfect. What's up with Chad's newfound flower-child 'love and peace' schtick? Did you do that? Because it's funny and also super weird.” Jared raised an eyebrow at the ceiling. “Bless Megs at school and Jeff at the hospital. Bless Dad and Momma and her students. Bless Sandy and bring her happiness. Bless everyone at Supernatural and the fans who bring us in for season after season. And please bless Jensen for putting up with me and bless Carol who is the best thing that has ever happened to a couple of goofs from Texas, Supernatural not excepted. Catch you later, God.”
With her fathers finished, Carol bowed her head. “'Sup God?”
Jared burst out laughing and Jensen pressed his fist to his mouth to hold in the chuckles.
Carol raised her head and smiled, as if she knew the joke she'd made. She dropped her head again. “Uh, bless Auntie Dan-kneel and Auntie Lis who lets me call her that since I can't say E-lis-a-bif right yet. Bless my aunties and uncles and grandpas and grandmas that I didn't have before. Thank you for my daddies, who are very nice and bless them too so they never go away like Mommy did.”
Behind the child's back, Jared and Jensen held each other's hand.
“Daddy and Papa say that you'll tell my Mommy stuff if I pray to you. So please tell my Mommy that I miss her and she sent me two very good daddies. I love them very much. I love her too and I miss her. Bye bye, God.” Carol raised her head. “I'm tired now, Daddy.”
Jensen picked her up and Jared helped them get situated in the bed, the little girl safe between the two men.
“Goodnight, Carol,” Jensen kissed her forehead. “Goodnight, Jay,” he leaned over to kiss Jared's lips.
“Goodnight, Jen,” Jared said. “Goonight, our little Christmas Carol,” he pressed his lips to her cheek.
“Goodnight Papa,” Carol turned her head and kissed Jared's cheek. “Goodnight Daddy,” she leaned up to kiss Jensen's cheek as well. “Goodnight, Mommy,” she blew a kiss to the ceiling.
