Stars Over Texas
Rating: PG-13 Chris swears and is the cause of swearing in others.
Word Count: 1506
Summary: Jensen proposes. And is kind of a moron. But Jared loves him anyway, so it's all gravy. Chris mocks his friend much.
Notes: I hadn't intended this to be more than a one-shot (which will be the name of my auto-biography I swear), but exesandzeroes was too blush-making in the praise (and offerings of strange and sweet things) that I had to open this up into a 'verse.
2nd Note: The song Jensen sings is "Stars Over Texas" by Tracy Lawrence.
Timestamp in the Dallas 'verse, which began because of this: http://community.livejournal.com/padacklesrps/3811284.html

It hadn't been the easiest of roads by any stretch of the imagination, getting to this point. Jensen splashed some cool water on his face and dried it off before he looked down by the right hand. A little velvet box containing a ring as unfussy and elegant as its intended recipient. A sudden flashback to the first time he'd ever proposed (to Danneel and god he really had never deserved that girl) and how nervous he'd been washed over him. “Great,” he muttered, feeling the sweat starting to bead on his upper lip.

“Hurry up or I'm leaving you here and laughing when Chris beats you up for bailing on him,” Jared's smiling voice carried from the hallway. “Heck, I'll be his back-up singer myself.”

Stuffing the ring into his pocket, Jensen answered. “I'm coming, I'm coming.” He exited the bathroom and smiled at his boyfriend. “If only to save the ears of the bar's patrons.”

Jared threw back his head and laughed. “Shut up, Ackles. Not everyone was blessed with a pretty voice. Some of us got pretty looks,” with an over-exaggerated pout, Jared set off for the door like he was walking a runway.

It was Jensen's turn to chuckle, following his lover and wrapping an arm around his waist. “And people like you got neither. You should file a complaint.” He kissed Jared's offended protests away. “Now let's get going before Chris finishes drinking all the good stuff.”

At the bar, Jensen saw Jared to a private booth on the second floor with a good view of the stage before heading backstage to meet up with his best friend.

“Shit, son, thought you'd pussied out.”

“Poetic as ever, huh Kane?” Jensen hugged his friend.

Chris pushed him back to arms length. “You ready?”

Jensen nodded.

“Are you sure?”

“Are you trying to talk me out of it?” Jensen asked.

Chris shrugged. “Your life, son. I learned my lesson trying to talk you out of Danneel.”

Jensen sighed. “And you were right. Are you ever going to let me live it down?”

“If you give me her number, I might,” Chris grinned. “Anyway, wouldn't try it anyway. Known for years you were batshit crazy about Jared. I was wondering when you were gonna man up and gay marry the kid.”

Jensen rolled his eyes. “Remind me to not ask you to be my best man in a moment of weakness. My mom'll be at the wedding and she'll wash your mouth out with soap right in the middle of your speech.”

Feedback sounded through the speakers as the crew finished setting up the instruments.

“Moment of truth,” Chris announced as he jumped up onto the stage.

Thunderous applause greeted Chris' appearance and he waved as he slung his guitar over his head and plugged it in. “How y'all doing tonight?”

Jared stopped clapping to cover his ears when the cacophony only got louder.

“Good to hear,” Chris smiled. “Now, if y'all can give just as warm a welcome to my special guest, Jensen Ackles.”

This made Jared whoop out loud and he blew a kiss when he caught Jensen's eye.

“Thank you,” Jensen smiled at the crowd.

“Now, we're get you guys rocking out tonight, but first,” Chris slapped a hand on Jensen's back, “my friend here has to get all sappy on his boy. We promise you a kickass show once we get the mushy stuff out of the way.”

“Nice, Chris, thank you.” Jensen laughed as he addressed the crowd. “As my soon to be ex-friend here said, I'd like to dedicate this to my boy, Jared.”

Jared tilted his head. What in the world was Jensen doing?

As you lie in my arms
Boy my heart's on my sleeve
Words come so hard, in moments like these
there's feelings I have, that are so hard to show
But right now there's one thing
I want you to know

Jensen was singing. To Jared. In public. Jensen's desire to keep their relationship on the down low had been what broken them up before and now... And now, Jensen was nodding at Chris, who started the rest of the band playing a soft melody. Turning back to Jared, Jensen met his eyes and continued.

As long as the tides ebb
The earth turns the sun sets
I promise I'll always be true
And as long as there's stars over Texas
Darling I'll hang the moon for you

A hush descended around the room as even the unruliest of fans listened in a breathless rapture to the beauty of Jensen's voice singing the sweet song.

I know I have stumbled and caused you some tears
When you needed me most I haven't always been here

Jensen's eyes lowered and Jared knew he was thinking of the year they spent apart before Jensen's ex, Danneel, had all but shoved them back into each other's arms.

I know I'm not always the man I should be

Jared watched as Jensen pulled something out of his pocket and tried to open it while still being able to sing into the microphone he held.

But don't ever wonder what you mean to me

When he'd succeeded, he tilted it towards Jared and the music stopped abruptly. “Jared, I love you and I know that I've been the world's biggest fool before and asked you to keep our relationship secret. Well screw that. I lost you once and I never, ever want to go through that again. Please say you'll make an honest man out of this moron. Will you marry me, Jared?” with a hopeful smile that was a shade apprehensive, he held out the ring.

Jared just stared. He couldn't believe his eyes and he involuntarily pinched himself to check that this wasn't actually a dream. Jensen was a sweet and thoughtful boyfriend, but he wasn't one for overtly romantic gestures, preferring more subtle expressions of love. So, for him to make this grand, public gesture broke down any lingering doubts Jared may have had about getting back with Jensen.

Unfortunately, while Jared was having this wonderful realisation, Jensen was stood up in front of a bar full of people holding out an engagement ring and getting no reply from his beloved.
“Uh...Jay?” He asked into the microphone. Panic started to set in when Jared's eyes snapped back to his and he jumped out of his seat, running out of Jensen's line of vision.

At this point dread officially dropped over Jensen's head like a bucket of ice water. “Uh,” he said again, turning to Chris with wide eyes.

Chris was just laughing and taking the microphone out of his hand, knocking him lightly upside the head with it before using it to point towards where Jared was running towards the stage.

The audience parted to let Jared pass and he climbed onto the stage without a single ounce of grace in his enthusiasm. Taking Jensen's face in his hands, he smiled. “Of course, I'll marry you,” he kissed Jensen lightly, “ugly.”

No sooner was Jensen's nickname out of his lover's mouth, than Jensen was kissing the smirk off Jared's face.

“A big hand for my dorky friends,” Chris called to the audience, who replied with a wave of applause. “All right, boys,” he used his guitar neck to point Jensen in the shoulder, “take your big gay love back home while I give these people the show they came for. What about it, folks? You wanna rock it out?”

Jensen and Jared walked out of the bar to start planning for the rest of their lives as a fresh round of applause followed them.

“The ring?” Jared asked when they got out into the heated Texas night air.

Jensen held out his hand, then realised there was nothing in it. “Oh shit!”

Jared guffawed, clapping his hands. “You...dropped...”

As Jared leaned against the wall and laughed, Jensen ran back into the bar.

Chris was singing one of his original songs and let Steve take over the guitar part while he tossed the box to Jensen. “So gonna be the best man,” he said before leaping right back into the lyrics.

Jensen caught the box and sent a thumbs up before exiting the bar again.

Jared was still getting over the last giggles as Jensen held up the box in a sign of victory, dancing his way over to his boyfriend.

“Moron,” Jared said fondly when Jensen got close enough to pull into his arms. “By the way, that was a yes.”

“I gathered,” Jensen smiled as he slid the ring on Jared's finger. “I love you, Jared. Always did.

“I love you too, Jensen. Always will.”

The stars shone bright as the two men kissed like their lives were just beginning.
