Always
Pairing: Jensen/Jared (unrequited), mentions Jensen/Danneel
Word Count: (because it still matters for a hour and a quarter, dammit!) 608
Warnings: Not real angst, but only a step or two below it. Resignation?
Summary: The parting of the ways at the end of the show. Songfic to "I Will Always Love You"
Notes: I blame my castmate for singing this song so beautifully tonight and making this pop into my head. Last J2 NaNo oneshot of the year. No worries though, I'm thinking of doing so more with the Christmas Carol 'Verse, so if anyone's got plotbunnies or ideas, leave 'em here and I'll try to give 'em a good home.
“You know,” Jensen said as he flicked the snaps closed on his suitcase, “maybe you could come stay with us for a couple days. We could remind our friends what we look like. Together.”
“Nah,” Jared shrugged. “I’m going to need to get the kids used to the L.A. place again.
He almost offered Jensen his guest room, but held back. Jared can’t promise himself that he wouldn’t offer his heart along with his bed. Besides, Jensen will be with Danneel as soon as they land in California.
If I should stay
Well, I would only be in your way
Jensen nodded. “If you’re sure,” he trailed off as if waiting for Jared to change his mind.
Jared stepped forward and wrapped his arms around his best friend. “I’m going to miss you, man.”
And so I'll go, and yet I know
That I'll think of you each step of my way
And I will always love you
I will always love you
“Gonna miss you too,” Jensen hugged back just as tight. “But c’mon, it isn’t like we’ll never see each other again, right? We’ve had too many good times to let it all go now. We’re brothers, man.”
Bitter-sweet memories
That's all I have, and all I'm taking with me
Good-bye, oh, please don't cry
“You bet we are, ugly,” Jared smiled to match Jensen’s grin at the use of the older man’s nickname. Somewhere inside himself, Jared knows that things won’t be like they were those years in Vancouver ever again. That was lightning in a bottle and some of the best times of Jared’s life. But now Supernatural’s over and Jensen’s engaged. He’ll probably be a dad within a few years. Jen’s even been talking about directing and maybe even writing in addition to acting. “You better have a fucking great life, Jensen.”
'Cause we both know that I'm not
What you need
But I will always love you
I will always love you
“You too, Jay,” Jensen answered. “And we’re going to be there for each other through it all. Hell, maybe I’ll even get to lead a standing ovation for you someday.”
They’re talking in the language of the damned: all ‘maybe’s and ‘going to’s.
Jared asked, “This your last bag?” even though he knew all the companion luggage was loaded down into Jensen’s truck in the driveway.
Jensen nodded. “This is it.”
And I hope life, will treat you kind
And I hope that you have all
That you ever dreamed of
Oh, I do wish you joy
And I wish you happiness
Those words falling from Jensen’s mouth snap something in Jared. All the feelings he’d been hiding since he first looked at Jensen and seen the older man in a different light that would have scared him if it hadn’t felt like the next step, evolving from their unique friendship.
Jared registered the shock in Jensen’s eyes as he stepped forward and curled his hands around strong shoulders. Before his rational mind can kick in, Jared was pressing his lips to Jensen's.
Jensen just stood where he was, still as a statue for a moment before he responded to the kiss, moving his mouth against Jared’s. The kiss was soft and tentative and Jared almost sobbed against Jensen’s painfully sweet lips as he pulled back.
But above all this
I wish you love
When Jensen’s eyes fluttered open, Jared whispered, “I love you, Jensen.”
“Love you too, Jay,” Jensen replied in exactly the unthinking way he always had.
Jared knew his words were a confession and Jensen’s were a farewell.
I love you, I will always love you
