Last House on the Block
Pairing: Jared/Jensen (any followers of my story Perks of the Job will notice there's mentioned Beth/Gareth as well)
Rating: G
Word Count: (Because it's NaNo now and this is important!)
Summary: A woman takes her kids trick or treating in Vancouver and knocks at a very special door. (J2 from outsider perspective)
Notes: I was working on my major novel, when this popped into my head. Blame it on the holiday. *smiles*
“Last house on the block, then we have to get back to the flat, Johnny,” Beth Lloyd shifted her sleeping daughter in her arms, then pushed the doorbell.
“Can’t we stay out longer?” Johnny pleaded with his mother.
Beth shook her head. “Jennifer needs to get home and you need to go to bed.”
The seven year old frowned. “Don’t wanna go to bed.”
“Quicker you get to bed, quicker you can wake up and have your Daddy make you candy waffles in the morning,” Beth soothed as the door opened.
Johnny held out his plastic pumpkin bucket and sang out, “Trick or treat”.
“Are you Johnny Cash?” The man asked as he balanced a half-empty bowl of candy against his hip. “Awesome costume.”
Johnny nodded enthusiastically, just as his mother blurted out, “Jensen Ackles!” With an embarrassed blush, she covered her mouth. Embolden by the man’s startled, but amused smile, Beth said, “I’m so sorry. I’m a fan, obviously. Supernatural and Ten Inch Hero.”
“Momma says when I’m thirteen I can go trick-or-treating as Priestly and dye my hair and draw on myself and everything!” Johnny felt the urge to add.
Beth’s hand rubbed at her temples. “Um, big fan of your work. And don't worry, he's only seen the cleaner scenes.”
Jensen laughed. “I’m glad to hear that. You new to town?”
“Temporary addition,” Beth explained as Johnny struggled to get his little guitar around from where it had swung behind his back. Without looking, Beth helped him sort it as she explained. “My husband’s filming a guest spot on, well, on Smallville,” she bit her bottom lip, “we followed for the week. We live in Cardiff, Wales.” Holding out the hand not cradling Jennifer to herself, the woman smiled, “My name’s Beth Lloyd. Johnny Cash down there is actually called Johnny and this,” she nodded down at the undisturbed toddler, “is Jennifer.”
“A sleeping puppy,” came a deep, but giddy voice as another man appeared in the doorway.
Beth’s eyes widened again.
Jensen laughed. “Jared, this is Beth Lloyd and her kids, Johnny and Jennifer. Her husband’s doing a spot on Smallville.”
“Small world,” Jared grinned widely.
Rolling his eyes, Jensen handed Jared the candy bowl and knelt down to Johnny. “Here, let me show you something?”
Johnny let Jensen place his fingers on the guitar neck and plucked the strings as they were gently moved. “That’s the start to ‘I Walk the Line’. Momma,” he pulled at his mother’s jeans leg, “he knows how to play ‘I Walk the Line’.”
Jared passed back the candy bowl. “Now give him a Kit-Kat and you’ve made a friend for life, Jensen.” For his part, he was cooing at the snuffling child in Beth’s arms. “She is beautiful.”
“Should see her with her eyes open,” Beth smiled proudly, “got her daddy’s gunmetal blue eyes.”
Jensen stood back up as Johnny immersed himself in repeating the motions the nice man had taught him. “Don’t hog the cute,” he said as he reached out slowly to give Beth plenty of time to pull back if she didn’t want him touching Jennifer. When she only smiled, he pushed back a lock of brown hair that had fallen over the little girl’s face. “Definitely a cutie. Gonna drive the boys wild when she’s grown.”
“I’m pretty sure Gareth’s already investing in a shotgun,” Beth laughed, but froze when she saw a glint of gold on Jensen’s left hand. On a whim, she turned her gaze to Jared’s left ring finger and saw a matching band. “No. Way,” she breathed.
Jensen had gone back to help Johnny again, so Jared responded. “What?”
Beth shook her head. “I’m obviously suffering from Halloween insanity, but… god, I just met you, I can’t ask.”
Jared shrugged. “Go ahead and ask anyway.”
“The rings?” Beth asked.
The tall man smiled and looked down at Jensen, his eyes softening in a way that Beth had seen in her husband’s eyes when he looked at her.
“Never mind,” she smiled. “That look was answer enough. I’m guessing since the Internet hasn’t exploded that it’s not public knowledge.”
Jared nodded.
“My lips are sealed,” Beth added, “if you’re wondering. I mean, I respect the both of you immensely as actors and good men and I wouldn’t do that. Though I hope you boys do announce it someday, if only so I collect on a few bets and buy myself some shoes.”
Jared laughed. “We didn’t expect the sixth season, but we were already signed up. Once it’s done and the CW execs stop breathing down our necks, we’re saying something. Not a People magazine cover, but something.”
“Which we won’t need to do if Jared keeps blabbing it to all the neighbours,” Jensen said, but the soft smile on his face as he looked at his husband belied his annoyed words.
Johnny let out a loud yawn and Beth rolled her eyes. “Cover your mouth, Johnny. Otherwise-”
Jared yawned widely.
Jensen and Beth shared a look and broke into smiles at the same moment. “C’mon, my little Man in Black,” she placed a hand on the back of Johnny’s head, “say thank you for the candy and a big thank you to Mister Ackles for helping you with your guitar.”
“Thank you for the candy. Big thank you, Mister Ackles, for helping me with my guitar,” the boy replied dutifully.
Whistling in appreciation, Jensen tossed his head in Jared’s direction, “Nice trick. Can you teach my old dog?”
“Old dog?” Jared spluttered. “What happened to-”
Jensen’s hand muffled the rest of his husband’s protest. “That was about to be five different kinds of inappropriate.”
Beth laughed. “I gotta get the kids and myself home before the Great Pumpkin comes,” she winked at the two men.
“Great Pumpkin!” Johnny exclaimed, already hopping down the few porch steps.
The woman had to hold her daughter with both hands, but she nodded at the men. “Thank you so much and,” she smiled, “congratulations to you both. We the fans totally saw it coming.” With a wink, she headed off after her now impatient son.
