Walks in the rain are magical.
It started raining right as Dad and I decided to go down and look at the over-flowing lake. It's a bit of a walk, but I suggested we walk. After all, who doesn't love the rain.
I was still feeling tense and sore towards Dad when we started, but that stopped when we got out in the rain. We took Shadow with us (the dog) and he was having the time of his life. Everything must have smelled really interesting, because he stopped every eight inches to sniff at something.
We walked down the road as the skies opened up. Five minutes into it, we were soaked. Shadow kept shaking himself. We talked about nonsense stuff. I don't even remember what we talked about. I wasn't paying attention to our conversation. I was just enjoying the walk in the rain with my dad.
We got to a dip in the road. It dips low, towards a creek and it was closed. We walked past the barrier anyway, to see if the water was low enough to wade across. It wasn't. Water flowed across the road as wide as a classroom, with branches sticking out of it like debris from a sailing ship and mud washing across the concrete. We decided to take an alternate route to the lake.
We walked past the police station and passed a cop car. Dad put Shadow on a leash quickly, lest we be ticketed. Jonestown passed an ordinance saying all dogs must be leashed. We got off with no trouble. The cop just waved at us.
We got down to the park that backs up to the small portion of Lake Travis, only to find that the park wasn't there anymore. It was completely flooded. Of ten picnic tables, only two were visible. One had half its roof sticking out. The other looked like a capsized boat, or the Loch Ness Monster. The small softball field was halfway underwater, as was the playground and pavilion. The boat ramp was totally submerged, and we could tell that the waters had been higher recently.
Having seen what we wanted, we headed back for the house, talking about Sanaya's imminent arrival (my baby sister-to-be, to refresh your memories). He also, ironically, brought up Space Spectacular Sunday and how much he missed that.
We got back to the house and dried Shadow off, which he absolutely loved. Then, we threw our clothes in the drier and went to our respective tasks of homework and home improvement. For supper, we watched Van Helsing.
Things are okay again. I suspect they will be for a while.
I guess I was so caught up in the moment, I didn't realize how simple things still are.
