For 2 consecutive days I have encountered an amazing amount of nasty messages people are exchanging on 2 mailing lists I belong to (one is not on LJ). In one, a person used an outrageous amount of profanity simply because someone else preferred a different fandom than theirs. The implication was that only stupid *%+@# people would be into it. Then I encountered someone angrily deriding the very fandom for which the mailing list exists. If you don't like it, why are you a member of its list?
I received nasty personal attacks for trying to suggest that we relax; they're just TV shows, and we don't need to be fighting, I guess I feel pretty frustrated that some people don't take the time to review their message, see what words might hurt people, and edit accordingly.
I think it'd be a good idea if we all remembered that once you hit the "post" or "send" button those words are pretty solid. You can't convey sarcasm well over the internet (without specifically mentioning that you're using it) and it's hard to try to explain hate-filled emails when you've calmed down and regret them.
Well, now that I've gotten that off my chest I think I'll go to bed.
