[ she's been on edge since her encounter with spock, and the surrounding ion storm has done nothing to calm her nerves. she's having trouble sleeping... or at least she was, and now she finds herself waking up, though she doesn't feel at all rested. she glances at the clock, groans perhaps more irritably than normal, and gets out of bed, stricken with a sudden impatience. out into the hallway she wanders in her nightgown, not entirely sure what she's looking for but very eager to find it. ]

[Mirror'd Kirk]

[Kirk has been wandering around the Starbase himself. He knows the layout of the building but... it feels off. Exact rooms are the same but there are small things out of place. His room being bare, for example. The lack of certain people, for example. Glaring slightly ahead of himself he turns the corner and bumps into Uhura.

His hands go out to steady the woman then he realizes who it is.]

Lieutenant.

[ a scowl flashes like lightning across her face and she's about to curse whoever wasn't watching where the hell they were going (not as though she was; her gaze was stuck on the wall, bare as it passed, no terran empire emblems to be seen), but she looks up and... it's the captain. not only does her annoyance evaporate, she feels oddly pleased, as though this turn of events is fortuitous. she nods, lips curling into a smile, and adjusts her nightgown for more modesty - or to draw attention to her chest. ]

Captain. I didn't expect to run into anyone this late.

Well. Normally I am sleeping at this hour... unless I have other reasons to be up.

[He lets the inclination hang before his eyes dart over to the window nearby. That damn storm was still raging on. Of course the small gesture of the nightgown doesn't escape him either as his hand comes up to brush against her arm.]

I thought Spock was running diagnostics on that god damn thing?

[ his name makes her bristle. after their fight the other night, she had been calmly putting pieces back together, taking some time to herself... but suddenly she's as angry as she'd been the moment he pushed her hands away from his face. she permits kirk's touch and turns her head, to look at the ion storm. ]

I wouldn't know. We aren't speaking.

[ well, they aren't as of now, anyway. ]

... You're not?

[Somehow that was a bit of a surprise. He isn't sure why it was a surprise... ah, that's right. Spock and Uhura were supposed to be together. He drops his hand and folds his arms across his chest.]

I suppose I'll have to ask him myself then.

He made a few unfounded accusations as to my fidelity.

[ she looks away from the window, turning to rest against the sill and face him, arms loosely folded over her stomach. ]

I don't suppose you had anything to do with that?

Uhura. Uhura, Uhura. Why would I ever get between you and Spock? It's such a perfect match for the Empire.

[A small grin tugs at the corners of his mouth.]

[ she scoffs, much the way she had when they'd first met back in iowa. ]

I've been asking myself that same question. What would James Kirk have to gain from sabotaging my relationship? Then I realised you were probably just bored.

You know, Uhura. I do have better things to do with my time than sabotage my First Officer's love rug.

[ she doesn't look at all credulous. ]

And I have better things to do with mine than convince the man I'm seeing I'm not sleeping with his boss, but I found myself in that situation anyway.

I wonder why Spock would think that... did you let anything slip by him?

Should've let my agoniser, but no, I didn't. I have been faithful. [ and the following she says without much inflection, other than annoyance, but she'll let him take it however he likes. ] Though right now I can't remember why.

It's what good girls like you do, Uhura.

No room for good girls in the Empire, Captain. Just bad girls with good manners.

Oh well, then. Let me rephrase: it's what your good manners tell you to do.
