[ bones knows when he's around an orion. he feels even more short-tempered than usual, and the fact that that alone bothers him turns their presence into one big vicious circle for him. still, the gentleman in him wins out: he can't in good conscience just leave her there. plus the pheromones have pleasant effects too, not that he'll admit it. ]

You're in Starbase Infinity, just as vague a place as it sounds.

[Gaila knows she's seen this man before, but she can't quite remember his name, something that's bugging her. But she pushes it aside and smiles at him.]

Thanks. How'd I get here, or is that detail as vague as the name?

[sickbay]

It is. I don't know what the current theory is, I've been a little busy cleaning up after Jim.

[ yes, there is a tribble on his shoulder. it took to perching there and mccoy just forgot to care at some point. and jim he doesn't mind namedropping because, on closer inspection, this is one of the girls his friend had been cavorting with before their assignment. gaila, if he remembers correctly. ]

You said you were assigned to the Enterprise?

[jadeskin]

[Oh, now she remembers who he is - Bones, Doctor McCoy. She couldn't place his first name, though, but then again she can't remember Jim ever actually using it.]

I was. There's apparently been a mix-up. Or I was told the wrong ship.

[sickbay]

Mix-up's putting it kindly.

[ he feels a bit torn. on the one hand, the girl needs familiarity, and he should tell her about jim. on the other, he's not exactly sure how well jim will take the news. ah, screw it. they both have a right to know, and jim can grill him about it later. ]

Jim's here - and Uhura. She was your roommate, right?

[ god, he swears he remembers more about jim's love life than jim does. ]

[She nods slowly, wondering what he's getting at.]

Okay. Who else is here? How long have they been here?

[sickbay]

Don't know, just got here myself and haven't had a moment to breathe since.

[ he plucks the tribble from his shoulder, neither particularly gentle or harsh. ]

If you see any of these, bring them to sickbay. And don't feed them.

[ he says it very clearly because mccoy is absolutely confident that you cannot trust women around cute things. ]

[She nods, and is indeed immediately smitten with the cute, fluffy thing. She even reaches out to pet it.]

Okay, bring them to sickbay, don't feed them. What are they?

[sickbay]

[ of course she pets it. he can't really blame her - he still finds himself stroking them without thinking about it now and then. these things are the devil, but they're almost impossible to hate. ]

They're called tribbles. They're born pregnant and the average litter is ten - we started with one and now we've got hundreds.

[She smiles, petting it as he explains what it is. Despite her going "omgcute", she's taking the warning seriously.]

So there's an infestation of them? Are they dangerous?

[sickbay]

Far as I can tell, all they do is breed and coo. We haven't figured out a permanent solution yet, but the starbase has over five-hundred floors. We shouldn't be in any danger for a good while.

[ he's still sick of finding them everywhere and would love to find a nice uninhabited, unsuspecting planet to beam them down to. ]

Huh. Well, that's good, at least.

[sickbay]

As far as silver linings go, it's as thin as you can get.

[ the puffball won't stop cooing, and it reminds him of where he was going in the first place. ]

I'm on my way to sickbay now, to drop off this little rodent. You can come if you want, or there's a map you can access through one of the wall consoles that'll show you where the cabins are.

Hm. Looking at the map may be a better idea, but I wouldn't mind the company. Were you staying in sickbay after dropping him... [she frowns, tilting her head and studying the tribble for a second] ...it off?

[sickbay]

I was gonna find my way to a rec room, actually. Getting sick of picking up these tennis balls all day.
