Reccer's Notes: This is the best novel-length fanfiction I've ever read: partly because it is simply astoundingly-written, and partly because it takes many canon details I love and either uses or reverses them among characters.
For instance, we see Kirk breaking rules and regulations for Spock in the TOS canon, but this flips the coin neatly into a role-reversal, even going so far as to court-martial Spock for doing what Kirk usually got away with with no more than a slap on the hand. It brings the Organians into play, neatly overlaying details from one of my favorite episodes, which is another thing that draws me to well-written fanfiction - canon detail.
Another minor point of interest to me: I normally despise OCs, especially female ones, in all shapes and forms, but this author creates one for a minor role and does so expertly, not making her a Sue at all but rather a component of the drama just as the women always were in Trek. It's a Kirk & Spock story, and the best epic-length fanfiction of that sort I've ever read (and I've read all of them, I think).

Also, because I think it gets overlooked simply because there is NO (and I mean NO) decent TNG fanfiction out there that's not solely romance-fic, this beautiful little gem for you.

Reccer's Notes: This is the only TNG fic I've ever found anywhere that was really worth reading, and it's probably the only non-slash Picard & Riker fic in existence, to my search and knowledge. I adore missing-scene fics, and this one is just beautiful for any fan who wanted to see more ramifications from the Borg incidents than just Picard's breakdown in the following episode - much fanfic has been written abour Picard's trauma from that episode, but none other than this one about Riker's. Again, pardon the canon detail enthusiast-at-squee here, but the author addresses the issues I was wondering about myself following those episodes between Picard and his First, giving us the comfort that really was needed after all the hurt. It's a lovely little oneshot, drowning in the sea of mediocrity that is the TNG section of ff.net. :)
