*blush* thank you so much! The more I write Pike, the more I discover new things that feed into the next story. (and lately, thansk to signing up for a GAZILLION challenges, there's *always* a "next story").
This is my first shot at McCoy, and I was pretty nervous. But I am so glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks so much! I wanted to sort of show how this McCoy is different from McCoy Prime in subtle ways (the aviaphobia, never going off-world, how he might have been affected by the destruction of the Kelvin), and also I just couldn't think of his recruitment going any other way... and with Pike being utterly wary right up until the last second, when All Becomes Clear.
Jim's recruitment still had so many questions for me... why were half a dozen cadets in Iowa? How did McCoy end up in Iowa, and looking like death on legs? Also, the way Pike has his jacket off and is drinking, when he gives Jim the Big Speach made me think he's not your standard recruiting officer. So I wanted to see McCoy through his eyes, and really get a sense of how that first meeting had gone. Clearly well enough that Pike requested McCoy be assigned to the Enterprise, after all...
But mostly, for me, it's about McCoy losing his daughter more than his marriage. One of these days, I'm writing the post-movie story where literally Enterprise his atmo and BAM, McCoy's in Georgia so he can hug his baby girl because when you almost die repeatedly, that's pretty much what you do.

This did that to me. Amazing Pike voice, and your McCoy broke my heart.
Just incredible images, dialog, and it's about as close to perfect as you can get.
