Notes: A late night Thursday night meant I spent the morning leg of the commute fast asleep. Proceeded to spend the rest of the day falling madly in love with the new job, then had a long-awaited Shake Shack dinner with an old law school friend before heading home. On a crowded Metro-North train I made just in the nick of time, I banged out maybe 2500 of these words, and knew I had steam in me for more. As I was writing, the rest of the chapter choreographed itself in my head, and I wanted to get it down while fresh. The dialogue and cultural references make me happy in this bit, especially a little digression about eating with your hands. One of the primary points of praise I'e heard so far for Beasts is the primacy of Nigerian culture in the whole book, how it shows in the language, in the food (oh especially the food!), even the attitudes of some of the characters. And I want to make sure I don't lose that here. Otherwise, making all sorts of progress. This is far more than I expected to get done today, though it's nice to have put out this much as I'll be out of town for much of the weekend, fulfilling yet another long-awaited project: seeing my big brother in Rhode Island. For what promises to be a wonderful, raucous, and spiritually rejuvenating time.
