And just like that, the 2013 Hollywood narrative of that year being the Year of the Black Actor comes to a screeching halt.
Out of four acting categories and 20 slots, only three of those slots are filled with black actors, two of them from the same movie.
In a year that saw Fruitvale Station, The Butler, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and 12 Years a Slave, each putting forward award-caliber lead actors performances and several of those films with award-caliber supporting turns, we get 3 out of 20. And with ten slots for Best Picture, Fruitvale Station, one of the most important films of the year is left out. In fact, it is left out completely. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa has more nominations than Fruitvale. So does Iron Man 3.
John Ridley got a nom for writing. Steve McQueen for directing. Pharrell for Best Original Song. I don't know if that's the totality of nominees of color, but the omission of Fruitvale seems to imply that the voters aren't quite ready to honor a fantastic film that offers no happy ending or redemption regarding the problem of racism in America.
Well, that's that, I guess.
