THRONE OF THE CRESCENT MOON
Saladin Ahmed
A random trip to the library to pick up some homework and I saw that they had this book available, so I immediately snatched it up, curtly reminding the rest of my reading queue of its place.
A swift and enjoyable read set in a refreshingly non-Western ethos. Just from my own brief encounters with the Muslim world, I noticed bits of worldbuilding that made me smile, chuckle, and long for those places.
It was refreshing to follow a protagonist well-on in his years and more fatigued by his duty than energized by it. It's a perspective I'm not sure I see often enough in this style of stories.
The worldbuilding is nicely handled and the adventure is saddled with enough humor to contrast the occasional bits of extreme violence. The banter did tend to drag at times and the uneven pacing made this seem less a standalone than the first volume in a larger tale (which it is), but aside from that, an engaging and very, very fun romp in a world I wouldn't at all mind returning to in future books.
