a new job

So, I've started my new job. And, so far, it's a lot different than being a graduate student. :)

My very first meeting was a discussion of the Communications Plan. Apparently, we have a public relations firm that is in charge of our "image" and "branding", and we need to provide them with content about our doings that they turn into press releases that are received with fanfare (ideally), all in preparation for the roll out of our future curriculum and policy analyses. Because a roll out takes a lot of planning and position, doncha know? OMG!

And guess what was waiting in my office for me on my first day? A box of office supplies. Not too exciting, you say? Well, first, then you've obviously never been a grad student where all such items must be purchased from your own funds, and you're lucky if the last grad student even emptied your new desk. And second, you haven't heard what was IN my supplies along with the stapler and post-its. One mylar blanket. Six foil packets of water, approved by the US Coast Guard. Two chemical snaplights. One list of FEMA-approved, low-thirst-inducing foods that are strongly suggested for purchase. You know, in case the ground cracks open and swallows me whole. None of which, it occured to me, would be very helpful if I were pinned underneath my bookcase or file cabinet. Toto, I don't think I'm in the Kansas (or the Midwest) anymore....
