Hi everyone! Some of you know me, many of you don’t.
I know the mod post said to do intro posts by the end of June... sorry, sorry, sorry. I don’t know how often I’ll be updating, perhaps not very, but I'm here now.
Preferred name: Holly
Working Title: The Chameleon Girl
Genre(s): As I imagine it, it’s got elements of magic realism, science fantasy maybe maybe not, and what I can best describe as pseudo-biography.
Important Characters: (So far, and most of them are NOWHERE near fully realized yet.)
Rosie Deacon: 18 - 20-ish when the story begins. Possesses the unexplained ability to change skin color, like a chameleon. Really really tall and thin, kind of a wiry build - not physically abnormal per se but stands out. Used to be introverted, extremely self-conscious. However, that changes when she begins performing in a sideshow and people are in awe of her… she begins to enjoy the attention and her growing fame. As she is right now, she likes being able to perform in the persona of the Chameleon Girl. I’m still working her out.
Thomas Deacon: 60’s when story begins. Rosie’s father. Devoted, a bit overprotective. Bachelor to the end. Well-liked but reserved and stays out of other people’s business. Ahead of his time in terms of social, political, and spiritual values, but he keeps it on the down-low to preserve his reputation. Intelligent, learned, well-informed. Dry sense of humor mixed with occasional irreverence. Can almost always spot a lie. Talks very little about himself, especially his past.
Adelbert Foster: Mid-30’s. Rosie’s personal manager, well-known in the show world. Moneyed, good-looking, sharp fashion sense that occasionally makes people think “gangster.” Very people-smart, tends to adjust his own mannerisms according to whomever he’s interacting with. Again, I’m still working him out.
A Brief Overview: After the loss of her father’s job/business/thing? in 1931, Rosie decides to join a sideshow to support herself and her father after years of trying to curb her tendency to change color, like a chameleon, due to different emotions; she trains and exhibits her ability under the title “The Chameleon Girl.” (Back then, a sideshow act actually earned quite a lot of money, even amidst the Depression.) As news about her spreads, she begins to garner fame, and… stuff stuff fame change persona father getting old stuff that I don’t know yet.
Things You’re Excited About: Writing something I actually want to write. Creating characters. The sideshow setting. The 19-fucking-30’s. Magic realism, even if it ultimately doesn’t exist in its current form. The research process (I’ve already learned a lot and I’ve got a lot more to do.) Learning what I can do with my first serious attempt at a novel-length story.
Things You’re Nervous About: How’s “everything” for an answer?
Any Thoughts or Concerns: 1) It’s in PROGRESS. 2) Showing work I care about to people besides my mom, my writing teacher, and the writing class is a risk I’ve never taken before, especially when all I know of many of you is a username and an icon. I’m nervous, but I think this is a good step for me to take, as is just finding a circle of people to discuss writing with. So… here goes nothing!
