What follows is a list of books I have suggested over the years in my teaching.
The links are by no means an endorsement, merely a convenience. I would prefer you shop for a used copy from my good friends at the
Recycled Book Store. Don't forget to pet the cat!
Tai Chi ClassicsMany believe this collection of texts constitute the basic reading of the tai chi practitioner. Much of our vocabulary for talking about tai chi come from here.
Tai-chi Touchstones: Yang Family Secret TransmissionsMany believe the Yang family wove intricate lessons within these lines of poetry. They are a fine source of contemplation for our practice.
There are no secretsSimply wonderful. Stories of the trials and accomplishments of students, over years of study, with their master.
The Dao of Taijiquan I bought this book for no other reason than it has sat on Master David's desk for as long as I have known him.
Iron and Silk An east coast American journeys to China to teach English, he learns much about the culture and martial arts.
Iron Monkey, A Journey to the West An English translation of a classic, Chinese Folk tale. There are more accurate translations I am sure, but I very much enjoyed the phrasing of an Englishman. I often quote this book in class, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
Tai Chi MagazineSeems to be the only English language magazine on tai chi. I suggest it reluctantly. I struggle with its editing and topics at times. Check out some of my back copies before subscribing.
