The grass is brittle brown and the dirt road still dusty but

down by the creek

where the trees bend to give cover and the red dirt’s always mud

the watermelon have grown and

today has finally come. So.

unhunch your backs, wipe off your foreheads

leave from the fields, jump off the shrimpin’ boats and

come to the grove.

That money you owe...you don’t owe today

a levee’s about to burst but let that sweet ripe red water

trickle down your chin

Realize this moment is real because

tomorrow will be just like yesterday
