Forget the dog, shoot the owner.

So last night, just before bed, I saw this article

It describes how a 71 y/o woman out doing her gardening was mauled to death in her own yard by the neighbor's dog.  The article says pit bull, but now they're saying they aren't sure what breed it is.

Does it MATTER what breed it is (except to good staffordshire owners who are sick to death of these stories, I imagine)?  Poodle, Presa Canario....Shoot the damned owner.  They ought to be able to ban someone from pet ownership for the rest of their lives in ADDITION to jail time.  I'm serious.  You have to work to create a dog that will leap over a fence into someone else's yard and kill an old lady doing her gardening.  You also have to NOT work to teach your dog the boundaries of its own yard.  I mean Jesus, if you can teach a dog to kill... can't you teach it to stay?

The dog is going to be put to sleep.  It always is.  It probably ought to be, unfortunately.  But why should the dog take all the legal heat?  If you worked very hard to install a loaded cannon in your yard, and one day it went off and killed someone who wasn't even IN your yard... wouldn't you get hit with manslaughter or involuntary murder charges?  I know in the Diane Whipple case, California had some laws set up under which the owners have spent some time in jail and may spend more (although I grant you that as sympathetic as I am, 2nd degree murder was a stretch).  I hope Kansas has a provision under which this dog's owner spend the next 15 to 20 years in jail.  Where, obviously, he should be banned from participation in any of those cool doggy rehab programs.

People just suck so hard sometimes.
