Cinema-Report #10 - 300: Rise of an Empire

Anybody who has watched "300" knows that there was bound to be a sequel - after all, Gerry Butler and his Spartans got (almost) all killed. However, it doesn't make much sense to call this one "300", too, other than to make a connection to the first film. Depending on when during this sequel there seem to be either less Greek warriors (and none of them a Spartan) or far more (apparently all men and women who want to fight for Greece).

The basic concept is the same: a lot of fighting which is displayed in a rather artistic way. As before, it doesn't really look as gruesome as it might be, because the lighting (and colouring) and slow-motion etc. just make it all seem more like a painting than like a real battle.
What's changed is that the opponents are much more normal than in the original movie and the fights are more varied. After all, this is not about 300 elite soldiers from the same cut. This time there are ship-manoeuvres, tricks, sword-fights, and of course the back-story of Xerxes and the mad fury of Eva Green.
This brings me to the actors. Aside from the women there isn't really anyone known on the screen, which makes you wonder why Lena Heady and Eva Green do it. The latter is fun to watch, that is if you enjoy a bit of madness now and then.

Although some bits of the film were a bit odd or even stupid, I enjoyed watching it. I'm even looking forward to the next sequel, because that story still isn't over it seems.
