I was quite the RoboCop-fan when I was little, I don't really remember why. In the last few years, I hardly have thought of it, however, and now there comes a remake.
In regard of this, the new movie was quite good. Of course, they brought in new ideas (like the whole background is different), but they also made a nod to some of the classic bits (like RoboCop's partner is still called Lewis and in the end he prefers his silver outfit). The good thing about modern remakes is, however, that the special effects are much better than more than 20 years ago. Although, I believe they made the old movie pretty well, too.
The new guy, Joel Kinnaman, is apparently from Sweden. He's not really the kind of person that sticks to mind, yet he was good for this role. A good RoboCop must be able to seem like a robot, but he also must be able to show his humanity with the little body language and facial expressions that are left to him. And yes, he does all of that very well.
The other people are fun, too. Both Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton may have gotten quite old, but they still are entertaining actors. The first is the scientist who may not always do the right thing, but he is RoboCop's most valuable ally aside from his former partner. The second is a ruthless business man without any scruples. Who knew Michael Keaton can be so mean?
One thing that stuck with me is a certain special effects shot. You get to see how RoboCop gets dismantled or rather how little of Murphy is left inside of him. I had nightmares of stuff like that as a child, although I don't remember ever seeing something of that sort in any of the films back then. I still didn't like it very much, but one had to admire the details they put in it ...
