Usually I'm not much into Asian movies, especially all the samurai-stuff - they just have too much stiff rules and are so honour-bound it borders stubborn. "47 Ronin" did not change my opinion, but it was a good film nevertheless.
It was nice to see Keanu Reeves again and I think he was well suited for that role. He certainly can do the stoic look of someone who has to be a subordinate, but who doesn't necessary like it. He also certainly doesn't show his age :) He's also still good at fighting.
The bad guy was a bit ridiculous, and I'm not sure if he was to be meant that way. He simply looks like the most slimy and annoying person I've seen since "Thomas Barrow" from Downton Abbey.
There were also neat special effects, like the "magical" swords or the "swooshing" attack.
I just don't know what they thought when they invented the monster-owl-like mentor of the hero. The face surely was creepily well done, but it seemed also pointless. And I thought that guy was more ugly than any Phantom of the Opera I've ever seen without his mask.
But what to think about the ending? Basically, you get warned of it at the beginning, and there really was no other way how this story could end. In fact, I might admit that this one was told well enough that it actually can handle a non-happy ending.
It's also fun to get there, since you get sort of 2 boss-fights for the price of 1. I really liked how they did that.
And till the very last, you think they might turn the wheel around and let everyone be happy - but as I said, samurai-people are stubborn.
