zoo trip

Today my first period class went on a field trip to the zoo. It was for my AP English class. For those of you who are reading and don't know what AP is, it's Advanced Placement. My school is on block scheduling: four classes a semester long, hour and a half each. This class will earn me college credit if I pass a test at the end of May. We're supposed to be on college level work, but with a teacher just out of college herself who has two other classes that are 10th grade standard English, I wouldn't wanna be assigning heavy stuff either.

Anyways, we have to write a paper around 2 pages long comparing an animal to something we've read. We've read The Oedipus Cycle, Brave New World, Catch 22, The Awakening, Heart of Darkness, Wuthering Heights, The Stranger, A Doll's House, Hamlet, and other literary works like Beowulf and other epic poetry.

The Nashville Zoo is pretty fair...it's not horrible to the animals and they're working on a few exhibits, but it's the end of November, so not everything's going to be as grand. It was fun, though. I enjoyed it and the people in my class are awesome (yet slow).

My paper is one of indignation. On the third or fourth exhibit, after the meerkats and some species of stork, there is a pond with a type of ducks. Zoos usually have signs to say what kind of animal the exhibit displays, some basic info, etc. Well, this one has none. But these are zoo animals because they have bands around their ankles. No information on them whatsoever. I think the map referred to them as "Waterfowl." There was only one kind of duck there, though. So I'm comparing mine to the narrator, Mersault, in The Stranger by Camus.

This girl named Savannah who is in my class decided to compare the meerkats to people in Brave New World. On our way back to front of the zoo, we passed by the meerkat exhibit again. These two meerkats were fighting and then one mounted the other. Everyone laughed and it made my teacher feel awkward. I asked Savannah if she was going to include that in her paper, she said yes because the people in Brave New World do have a lot of sex.

Anyways, it was a good day. We had some time to kill before we left, so we all played on the jungle gym, teacher included. It was pretty funny on the way back, a lot of people in the back fell asleep. They were the ones super-hyped up about the trip to the zoo, and they're always super-hyped up about everything, so I got to see them sleep. Not watch, though. That's just rude.
