Jake had slept a little fitfully the last few nights since returning home. Something had changed, and he was certain it had to do with Peyton Sawyer. He had gone to see her almost immediately and for those first few moments when her arms had been around him, everything seemed like it was back where it should be. But then the hug has stopped, and Peyton had gotten quiet. Then Lucas showed up. Not that Jake hadn't been happy to see his old friend, but there seemed to be a tension between the three of them that he couldn't quite place. He attributed it to his being away and tried to push it from his mind, telling himself that things would be back to normal soon.
He had been playing with Jenny on the bed when his mother, who had been in the kitchen watching the news and eating breakfast rushed into the room. "Somethings going on at the school. Someone has a gun." Jake's heart froze as the worst possible images began circling through his mind. He had to get down there and make sure his friends were alright. Especially Peyton. He couldn't let anything happen to her now that they finally had a chance at things again. He left Jenny with his mother and flew out of the house and into his truck.
He pulled to a halt outside the high school and searched the crowds of police, students, and spectators for a familiar face. After what seemed like forever, he found one.
"Coach!" He yelled in Whitey Durham's direction, causing the older man to turn his head.
"Jagielski?" He looked genuinely surprised.
"Coach, what's going on? What happened."
Coach Durham looked pained and a little afraid. "The worst thing that could happen Jagielski. Someones got a gun in there."
The older man saw Jake's look of panic, and gave him a nod. "They've got all the students over in the gym."
Jake nodded and ran off towards the gym where he had played so many basketball games. Once inside the double doors, his eyes darted across the crowds. Then he saw her, sitting alone on the bleachers. It looked like she had been crying. "Brooke!" He said moving toward her.
