The TRIP!!!

So Friday morning Sarah and I got on our bikes and rolled up outta town. We rode about 70 miles or so to Lake Geneva, where we camped at the Big Foot Beach State Park. Very nice. Pleasant day, a bit warm, crazy traffic in places until we figured out a good alternative to Alqonquin Road which sucked ASS. Saturday morning we got back on our bikes

Wow, you told everything that happened already. As for Saturday afternoon, and slowing down and taking more breaks on our ride, it was the knee and the fact that I wasn't keeping properly fueled up. Some pastry (see interests) fixed that.

The hills in Madison are small. Check out San Francisco or Seattle. And people ride fixed gears there. The bike I rode in Seattle the last time I was there was a white mixte (I don't remember what brand) but with mountain bike gearing.

I noticed a strange diverse-not diverse thing about Madison. People had different skin colors, but everyone seemed pretty mainstream (acted white), like there wasn't any of the minority culture we have so much of in Chi-town.

I had a great time too.

I know there's plenty more hilly places around, I just don't like them:) I hadn't really noticed that about Madison, but I think you're right now that I look back on it. We didn't interact THAT much with local folks though.

I thought you'd be interested to hear, I got my bike up and running finally. I like the ride quite a bit and adjusting to a single speed with all the hills is interesting (this is no San Francisco in terms of hills but then I've never used a single speed in a place with any hills before) I've got a few kinks to work out (that dust cover won't stay on...), but over all, I'm well-pleased. It's been fun and I've been using my car a lot less.

that's awesome man! I tell ya what I'm gonna do. I will build you a wheel and mail it to ya, one that will work really well. How many teeth are on the front chainring, and how many are on the one you're using in the rear? I can send you supplies to fix it up real nice and fancy if you want. I mean, it's not going to be ultra fancy, but it'll be hands down better than what ya got. I'll just charge ya shipping. I've got various parts lying around, and I can get the rest cheap/free. So yeah, count some teeth there and post it here, and I'll see what I have layin' around.

...but I'm not that bike savvy yet. The chainring is the thing that the chain is on? The wheels I have are for a 10 speed, though I have it set up as a single speed. I can count and get back to you, but which do I count? Do I simply count what I currently use and forgo the possibility of gearing it differently later if I wish to? I was thinking I might want to change it later, after I get more familiar with how all this works and apply myself to riding longer distances....

Man, we ought to talk some time. :)

The chainring is the part in the front that the chain is on, The ones in the back are called cogs. What I can do is build you a wheel that just has one cog, but you can have them removed and replaced without too much difficulty. I could even send you the appropriate tool for removal, although that would cost a few bucks. I should be getting a phone as soon as I get paid again at shop #2.

Sounds like a pretty awesome trip! I wish there were places around here for my wife and I to go touring to, and also that she would be into that kind of thing. She has started riding the beach cruiser I got her and repainted, so, maybe she'll get more into it and want to ride serious mileage. If you want someplace flat to ride, FL would be your place. My nice new mountain bike is going to waste for want of places to ride it that are closer than 3 hour drives. But my commuting bike has come into its own and seeing more miles than ever

I'm getting a semi-track bike. It's gonna have track geometry AND cool things like fender and rack mounts, drilling for two brakes, and two bottle cages. I'm in the process of building up a touring frame I got used though. I had it together enough to ride to Madison, but I still need to get the proper rear hub, cassette, chain and seat, and then I need to build the rear wheel. I just got a pair of Dura-Ace bar end shifters for it last night too. After I finish with the bike itself I'm going to move on to racks and panniers, 'cuz I've been borrowing a set from Sarah's roommate whenever I go on a trip, but I need my own. My frame has braze-ons for a front rack, so I'll be getting front panniers too, which is pretty exciting. This frame is exactly what I had been dreaming of when I thought about touring (well, touring that isn't by tallbike, I had other dreams for that). It's WAAAAY awesome.
