a quickie on nicki's mirage

can i please just see some ladyrappers come into the spotlight without any sort of attachment to Some Dude We Already Know? ohhh, i would love that.

i read this article, and actually, you know, it made me kindof mad? i think it was pretty poorly written - it went all over the place and either made very strange implications or just said things because this lori adelman thought they were somewhat related and wanted to say them. i am still unsure. but there are a couple things i wanted to complain about immediately and zack is asleep so i can't talk to him about it right now so IT IS YOUR LUCKY DAY, INTERNETS. you get to see jessica complain about some stuff!

she's as frank about being bisexual as she is that sex happens on her terms or not at all.

what? that is not my experience at ALL, and i was super intrigued (i feel a little guilty in hindsight, but it was less a gawking thing and more a woah something i did not read and maybe she is being awesome here sort of link click, believe!) so i clicked on the link. turns out even the author-provided (in-site) link does not support the statement made, but rather backs up my previous knowledge: nicki is pretty tight-lipped when it comes to definitive answers on her own sexuality. i'm down with that; it's her sex life, you know? and nobody hounds folks who don't challenge their own compulsive heterosexuality, so she should at least have the right to the same level of privacy others get. still, that makes me pretty irritated with the original article, and does not bode well for the author's credibility. saying "let me see your boobs" on a gucci song, SIT DOWN THIS IS GOING TO BE SHOCKING, is not the same thing as "being frank about being bisexual." it is not even the same as just plain ole "being bisexual." it is saying a stupid line in a brainless song. that's it, y'all.

a little later, the article talked about how we're unlikely to see a queer male rapper come out any time soon, since his label would be unlikely to allow it (some stuff about sustained careers blah blah). which is kindof an interesting thing to talk about, i guess, but it's something that's really been talked to death in my world and i still don't really see anyone actually DOING anything about it. also i don't really buy the money argument in the first place, but maybe that's just me... thing is: what does this have to do with the original topic? i don't get it. am i supposed to infer that things would be the same for ladyrappers if they existed? kindof unlikely, don't you think? if nothing else, for the simple fact that people don't deal with and react to queer females the same way they do queer males? I DON'T GET IT, WHAT ARE YOU GETTING AT LORI ADELMAN?!

and then there's that part later where she brings up jay-z saying that people need to rap about love and losing their homes and stuff and like i thought this was an article about nicki minaj and whether or not she is going to help with rap's misogyny problem (answer: unlikely. she can be interesting and subversive sometimes, but often she participates without any real commentary, so... you get what you get, i guess.) but hey maybe you are suggesting that nicki (and other ladyrapper hopefuls) start rapping about LOVE. OH YES. LADYTALK=LOVE. THAT'S APPEALING AND ASDSADFGWERTSTABBING!!

though i've gotta admit that this part was something i related to so much that it made me ache:

One powerful sister who identifies as feminist and works in education admitted to me that the absence of mainstream female rappers for so many years has left her "desperate" for Minaj's female voice -- "any female voice besides a lusty vixen asking some man to be her 'daddy' in a hook."

...i still own a copy of pink friday. whatever, it strains me to admit it was... not... great..., but imma still try and vote with my dollars. maybe one day i will have more than a handful of ladies currently rapping to talk about. then maybe i won't have to feel like such a shit for putting so many expectations on a pink wig, thick ass barbie.
