Friday & Saturday

I had my cholesterol re-checked at LabCorp in Newark yesterday morning. When I was giving the doctor's  orders to the technician, I noticed that he also ordered a hepatic panel. "Hepatic" has to do with the liver. Now, that is odd. I can't envision what would be going on with my liver that he would be checking out.

I meant to ask how long it would take for the lab to process the results and send them to my internist, because the appointment needs to be for after he's received the results. Got to remember to call them on Monday and find that out, then make the appointment. I still need to discuss that headache pain medicine suggested by the neurologist with the internist.

After LabCorp, I walked over to the Newark Co-op. I've belonged since forever but I rarely shop there--it's plain too expensive even with a member discount. I bought roasted unsalted almonds and something like "Save the Trees" granola, both available in bulk, plus a couple of rosemary and olive rolls. Nuts and grains are my standard purchases at the co-op. Sometimes, I get one of their dozen or so varieties of granola but I have fun creating cereal combos on my own too.

The rolls were something new. I went looking for replacement fish oil--which raises good cholesterol--and went down the wrong aisle. Several people were loading up the incoming delivery of baked goods and while I was waiting to get past them, a couple of savory little rolls called out to me. I had been fasting because of LabCorp so they were perfect! So perfect, I immediately wanted to eat one of them and went to the checkout register without looking for the fish oil. S'Okay. I still have some.

I ate a roll and drank some of my bottled water while waitng for the bus home. It was extremely yum! I admit it might not be for everyone--you have to like those Greek olives since the rolls have actual pieces of olives in them.

When I got home, I had to get busy preparing for our Written Remains "Make a Scene" workshop for Saturday morning. I mentioned preparing for this the other day, when I chose Tolkien's "Leaf by Niggle" and Charles Williams "The Greater Trumps" chapter one.

Friday afternoon, I worked through my own stuff and tried to find opening scenes or chapters to distribute to others. Nothing seemed satisfactory except the opening scene of "Daisy and the Paper-Mice", a mystery short story told from the point of view of a house cat. I wrote it years ago, Written Remains has even critted it, but it still doesn't have a home.

For my first chapter, I chose Chapter One of "The Gryphon and The Basilisk" (aka the sequel to Earthbow which is the sequel to Seabird, aka the 3-volume "The Behemoth"). I -really- hate it! (I mean the first chapter of G&B) Chapter 1 is more lke fragments for three or four first chapters sandwiched together, with just some overlapping characters to connect the pieces. At least the events are in chronological order.

I was up late by the time I finished choosing and printing these samples, and then I had to get up early Saturday in order to go to the workshop itself (began at 10 a.m.), so I was hardly at my best for it. (Try having an upper level English class at 4 in the morning your time, when you've been out of college for a few decades--and see how you do.  ;-)   )

KB came and plucked me from the workshop at 1:30, to take me to the foodstore. Since I was unconscious and had been hauling stuff off and on during the early part of the week, I made as short work of shopping at Pathmark as I could. I took care to get more litter, juice, diet Mountain Dew (my summer caffeine drink of choice), chicken, "health salad" (a cousin of cole slaw) & lettuce. The temp and humidity had really let loose by then-- 91 degrees with a heat index of 107 degrees. By the time I was home and everything was put away, that was it for my Saturday. I've been putzying a bit now and again since then (on the computer and such) but I haven't been able to do anything substantial. I did take a nap to fight off a headache. We're supposed to be hot and humid through Tuesday, I think.

Maybe more later. More likely not.

Tomorrow, I promise to list all of the readings that the other workshop people brought, plus the recommended readings from writing books.
