Fanart stuff

Feb 27, 2010 09:58

I've been sick with a fever and away from the internet for the last few days, but from what I'm reading on Twitter, fanart was brought up during the Nick Simmons comic controversy. I'm baffled even why it was brought up. I caught up at Simon Jone's blog on the matter. He brings a class act to the subject and the following comments are broad enough ( Read more... )

Thank god you made this entry, too. I forgot to purchase a table!

The sale of fanart and derivative works to me is in general a very very gray area. I think the law is something like, as long as it's not denting the sales of the original work and it's derivative for artistic rather than commercial purposes, it's not infringement, but even that is a really loose definition!! AHH!

"charging 20 bucks for a 50 cent photocopy of your fanart"

I dont get this at all... why pay so much for something you can print off at home? The quality is bad and no matter how 'cute' or 'funny' the fan art is, it is fan art and most likely (for that price anyway) popular series. These same artists keep complaining that prints dont sell, but prints/posters are my most sold items.

I haven't seen an AA to see prices, but I've stupidly paid $25 for a 24 page doujin. (Never again)

I try to be very careful of what I mass produce fanwork-wise, but make stuff I'd like to buy: books and small postcards. (Even then, I'd feel horribly guilty selling postcards by themselves, so--freebie!) I lose money because I love. (lol)

This is why I find the OFP sort of backwards in logic, lol. They can make a living off fan art, but if you dare display any of their work online, YOU BURN. But you know, in Rome do as Romans do. They have their own idea of what is acceptable, and I'll abide by that as long as I am dealing with them ( ... )

dont know too, that people keep forgetting that in japan, doujins are expensive to print and charge for cheap. Even if they bring a lot of copies they are lucky to break even.

another thing, those doujin resellers bother me to no end.

any how, last year I tried selling fan art, not for much either but..
As much I do love sailormoon and just love magical girl series..

Under neath that smile I gave the customers, I felt really insulted when some one says "OMG I love your work!" and buys all the keychains and leave with out looking at anything else. I'm not asking for you to buy my originals, but looking is free. Why wont you give me the time of day?

I didnt have the same problem with other more obscure or older series. Dont know why either but they were fun to talk to.

I've yet to experience the things you guys have, but I'm already jaded enough that even my fanworks will be ignored. (lol) I see AA tables with posters and works EVERYWHERE and there's no way I could compete with a flashy set up like that. But at an anime con, and I'm selling my fanwork that I like, I hope to attract folks who like the same as me.

I think having a webcomic is smart, because it's an original property and the more you update, the more people read and will become fans, so the less and less need to attract with fanwork. /end ramble @_@

We just gotta be patient, and keep working.
