Cake, or Crack?

It all began when I had the Food Network on as white noise in the background while I discovered all of Azeroth during the Midsummer Fire Festival event. I was half paying attention to both the tv and my laptop, when on came this show about cake. Wedding cake, engagement cake, cakecakecakecake. I've had the urge to cook for a little while now, so I perk up and start watching. After about an hour of buttercream, fondant, raspberry coulis, and chocolate ganache, I had decided that I was going to make a cake. And not just any cake, oh no; a pretty cake.

Now, I have learned from my previous baking experiences that one should never make a cake for no reason, as nobody will eat it and it goes bad. Bad cake is too huge a shame to bear. Well, it just so happens that Colin and I are moving soon, so we will have the amazing dual-purpose occasion of having all my cooking utensils available, as well as a reason to have people over for cake eating! Great! Now to figure out what kind of delicious masterpiece I will be crafting... Colin likes white cake, and I'm fascinated by italian meringue buttercream, so that will be one 'tier.' Oh god. Tiers already. Of course there will be chocolateers there too, so chocolate is a neccessity. What goes well with chocolate? Raspberries. It just so happens there is a raspberry version of that same IMBC recipe! It's meant to be. Now, I've tried to frost pretty cakes before, and it goes decently, but I really want to go all the way here. All the way meaning fondant, baby. Only problem is, people think fondant tastes gross. This is why we have the internet, people. Marshmallow Fondant, or MMF to the rescue! Sweet, easy to make, and beginner-ready. And it's that very same internet that lead me to amazing sites, like Bakerella and Cake Journal, absolutely brilliant for giving one the cookin' bug.

Hmm... what else... Col says he wants square cake, I can do that, but I'll need to buy a tiny square cake pan. No probs. I also have to get a rolling pin. And a frostingy spatula (technical term.) Prolly some fondant smoothers, too. Oh, and I have to get those mixer attachments from my cousin. Speaking of relatives, maybe I should ask my grandma, she's really good with *wanders off mumbling incoherently*

--15 Minutes Later--

Sorry. Now I have a list. Lists are my friend.

Well, crud. I have this grandiose plan for how I'm going to make this awesome cake and everyone's going to love it, om nom nom, which would be great, except that this is still the first time I'm going all the way on the decorating end. I should practice so I don't end up with something from Cake Wrecks. Which is by the way where I spent THE ENTIRE DAY today. Colin says I'm out of control. He's right. I know he is, and I can't stop.

Hmm. I wonder how big my practice cake should be.
