Never Forget What I Lost

Adrenaline kept him going in the minutes after they'd barred the gate. Villagers needed arms. Robin and Guy shouted orders.

There'd been no time to think. No time to mourn. Allan...

Much passed the last crossbow to one of the farmers from Locksley then stared at the empty wagon. Only a few minutes before he'd helped the others unroll the body delivered by Vaizey. Allan... dear God... no...

Much blindly ran across the keep and found a dark, secluded spot near the tailor's shop. He pressed his back against the cold stone. Tears filled his eyes and he began to tremble uncontrollably. Slowly he slid down the wall, buried his face in his hands, and cried.

A gentle hand rested on Much's shoulder. He opened his eyes and saw that Little John's face was streaked with dirt and dried tears, his own eyes reddened. "He was telling the truth," Much whispered, his voice cracking. "Why didn't we listen?"

Little John shook his head sadly.

"It's my fault," Much murmured, his eyes shifting restlessly. "I said we should tie him up. If I hadn't--"

"Don't think that way." John struggled with his own emotions, drenched in pain and vividly recalling those moments at the camp that forever became part of who they were. The pleading in Allan's blues eyes, the disbelief that etched his face--now bitter reminders of his innocence. "We agreed. Every one of us."

"But he doesn't know... he died thinking we all hated him! How can I... can we... ever forget that, John?"

John glanced toward the darkening skies. "He knows, Much. We lost our friend today. Forget what we said, what we did, what we should have done. Remember that we loved him."

Much nodded, his mouth pursed tightly to stop his lips from quivering. "Him, we loved," Much finally whispered, echoing words he'd heard John say too many times before. "And we'll never forget you, Allan. Never forget what we lost."
