Series Three Episode Eight - The King is Dead, Long Live The King

Silly ramblings from one viewing

Firstly - I am an utter idiot and due to being home alone with no-one to remind me while I was cooking tea, actually forgot that this was on! Consequently had to catch up on iPlayer and didn’t record it onto Sky. Feck.

On with it properly then, and let’s go straight to Much, shall we? He had some very sweet times this episode, being all gentlemanly and then scared (I’d have held his hand!), and I think there was another little moment of Much growing up a little and distancing himself from Robin, as although he looked sad about Robin apparently not having made it to the stables, I don’t think he looked as devastated about Robin’s possible peril as he might’ve been in previous series.

It was interesting to see them practicing with their fighting at the start (also that Robin called it ‘training’ and then Sheridan, the one who trained him, pops up), but poor Much running into a tree, especially after he was being so considerate and not wanting to hurt Robin. Was anyone else reminded of Djaq in 'Turk Flu', the way Allan was waving that mirror or bit of glass or whatever it was around?

Speaking of, must say it was a shame to see Allan and Much properly arguing again :( Bloody women ruin everything! However, I did think it unusual for it to be Allan rather than Much who gave the plan away, and with the little nod to him caring about Kate I think it makes it sweeter that he doesn’t do anything about Much liking her, instead he actually gave him advice (although I guess, particularly the way Kate acts, Allan doesn’t see him as much of a threat, bless him). Poor Allan never gets the girl! He could always have me though…

On to Prince John. He is quite delightfully mad, and it’s funny to see him hamming it up, but things still aren’t the same. He does have some great moments though, when the body of ‘Richard’ arrived he reminded me of Scar supposedly mourning Mufasa in the Lion King! Although that was probably just me. Hell, for a moment at the coronation I also thought he was holding the Holy Hand Grenade, but that would’ve been quite odd. One thing though, was that the real crown he had? I thought Richard was wearing it in ‘We Are Robin Hood’, does he have more than one or something? If not, how did John/Sheridan get hold of it without anyone noticing?

I think Isabella will make quite an interesting Sheriff, and the way she was talking to Gisbourne when he had his sword to her throat did actually remind me of Vaisey somewhat. She really does have to get over being married off though. Yeah, it must’ve sucked, but seriously, it’s getting annoying. As bad as Marian always whingeing about Edward, who I must say, generally seemed pretty alright for the big deal she liked to make out of it.

I think maybe I missed something, or I wasn’t paying attention (N.B I have only seen this ep the once on iPlayer, I might watch it again tomorrow morning and check if I have time - have cake and jam-making planned around the F1!), but what exactly happened with Guy at the end of the last ep, or inbetween the two? Prince John or Isabella said something about him being outlawed I thought, I know they had that four-way fight last time but I’m not quite clear on what happened - was he actually outlawed or did he just leg it or something?

It was good to see him being rebellious again, although I must admit, when I saw him dressed as a guard and it being apparent he was going to do something, I had hoped there might be a bit more incidental collaboration between him and the gang, that would’ve been interesting.

And a few extra thoughts: perhaps Allan could consider a more honest career as a waiter once this outlawing business is over? Hehe. And yay, I guessed right about the crown being hidden in the dungeons! That bit was a nice reminder of the Indiana Jones-esq strong room of series two, and also a bit Crystal Maze! The archbishop was cool, and with regard to Robin getting caught at the stables, what was it he was always saying in series one? ‘Last man’? Fool, look around you!

And, innuendo of the week: Robin telling Much to ‘Get it up’
