Nothing
by robinfanatic
The finest spot in all England. Didn't seem that way any longer. There was something wrong about it. Here... alone... there was nothing.
Much glanced at the spot where Robin should be sitting and felt fresh tears wet his cheeks. Branches rustled in the trees and the smell of freshly plowed fields wafted on the breeze.
Memories came flooding back but they seemed empty. Nothing.
"I knew I'd find you here."
He hadn't heard her come up behind him. He flinched, remembering he'd said those same words to his former master the last time the two of them were here. That wasn't a memory he wanted and suddenly 'nothing' sounded good.
Kate sat down and drew her knees up, wrapping her arms around them tightly. "I used to watch you and Robin when I was a little girl," she mused.
Much wiped his tears away and stared down the hill at Locksley. "You watched us?"
"Oh yeah. Saw the two of you up here tumblin' across the hill or sittin' up here, watchin' the village. I was so jealous that he was with you. Didn't seem right. He had both of you... you and Lady Marian. I had nothin'."
"Me, too. Jealous, that is." Much smiled, one of the first to pass his lips in the days since they'd laid Robin to rest. Fidgeting, he brushed his fingers through the tall grass then cleared his throat. "Kate?" he said, turning to her with a sparkle in his innocent blue eyes. "Are you sure? You know, about me... and you?"
Kate grinned mischievously. "You're dirty, and you smell, and you're nothin' but trouble."
Much cupped her face in his hands and pulled her close, caressing her lips with a kiss. He lingered there for a few moments then gently pulled away and nodded that funny little sideways nod. "Nothing, eh?"
She shook her head. "You?"
Much tipped his head from side to side then shook it with a firm 'no'. "Not a thing," he said with a smirk.
