Part 2

Guy grimaced while the Sheriff had his back to him. Some new scheme for defeating Hood... Evil Intelligence 5, whatever that was supposed to be. Why couldn’t they just trap Hood and kill him? Swords work much better than complicated plans.

“Counter intelligence,” Vaizey was saying. “It’s all the rage on the continent.” Then he spun round suddenly, and Guy had to change his face quickly, adding what he hoped looked like a sincere nod of agreement. “They think they’re the sneaky ones,” Vaizey continued enthusiastically, “with their little spies among the servants, and their coming and going in the dead of night. Well they’re not.”

“No, sire?” Guy said half-heartedly.

“No!” Vaizey said with a clap of his hands. “We are the sneaky ones. We’ll out-sneak those outlaws until they’ve got nowhere to hide.” For a few moments, the Sheriff stood there, as if he was waiting for Guy to do something; then he realised his henchman needed prompting. “Well run along then, Gisborne! Your men are waiting for you in the torture room.”

Guy frowned. “The torture room? Why not see them here in the Hall?”

Vaizey rolled his eyes. “Secrecy is of the utmost importance here, Gisborne. Forget that, and the whole plan will fall apart. No-one must know about the existence of EI5. No-one.”

Guy walked away wondering why the Sheriff couldn’t have found someone else to oversee his ridiculous scheme.

Part 3

Edwin sat on the rack as he chatted to Ailred, the only other EI5 recruit so far. “I’m not really sure about this, you know.”

Ailred frowned. “Should you be telling me that?” He twirled an attachment from the thumbscrews between his fingers thoughtfully. “The Sheriff told me we’re not to talk to anyone.”

“That doesn’t mean us though! We are the spies!”

“But I might be supposed to report you to Gisborne for being unenthusiastic...”

“We’re spying on Hood and his informers! Not each other!” Edwin exclaimed. He was beginning to wonder whether working alongside Ailred was going to be much fun at all.

“Yeah, but what if you turned out to be working for Hood? I’d have to report you to Gisborne, wouldn’t I?”

Edwin shook his head in disbelief. “But... but I’m not working for Hood, am I?!”

“I don’t see how I know that. It’s not like I know you very well. We’ve never even been posted to the same turret before.”

Before Edwin could make any reply to that, the door to the torture chamber swung open, banging against the stone wall and sending an echo that could surely be heard in the nearby dungeons. Gisborne walked in. Ailred stood to attention, and Edwin got up from the rack quickly so that he could do likewise.

“Well then,” Guy said with a sigh. “This is your first EI5... briefing. You’re going to be spying on the outlaws. You’ll work independently, undercover.”

“Undercover, sir?” Edwin repeated.

Guy sighed again. He would really rather have been out there hunting the outlaws down than running this new operation. “You go about your duties as normal, but you watch everyone, and ask questions. Look out for servants with outlaw sympathies, or fellow guards who never seem enthusiastic about fighting the enemy. Find out how information is getting out of the castle. You’ll report to me in here every week.”

“Yes sir!” Ailred said enthusiastically, shooting Edwin a sort of knowing look.

“Any questions?” Guy asked. “No? Good.” With that he turned round and walked away. He hadn’t given Edwin a chance to get in his question about whether they were getting a pay rise.
