Author's notes: So, I was listening to songs from musicals yesterday while washing up (oh, my glamorous life) and Maybe This Time, from Cabaret, came on. While singing tunelessly along, the lyrics reminded me somewhat of Allan. For those of you who know the song and it's lyrics, no, not all of them, for those who don't,
go here. So, obviously, a fic was born. Hope you enjoy!

It had to happen sometime.
So why not now, with them? Robin and the gang seemed a good bunch, trusting. Trust which one day may prove to be their downfall, though Allan hoped it wasn’t. He hoped he’d pull through, not let anyone down. Not be let down himself, either.
Because that’s what happened, wasn’t it? There was always someone new to tag along with, play the cool, independent stranger for. Until it went wrong, and it always, always went wrong somehow.
Sometimes it’d be them. Someone had lied, used him, let him down… But usually it’d be his fault. He’d get greedy, stupid, cocky. Just plain annoying.
Either way, Allan would end up alone again. Every time, he lost everything, everything he’d been trying for.
But maybe this time it’d be different. Why not? It could be. They were a good bunch of people, and he was doing good things with them. For once. With them he was a good man, the best man he’d been in… many many years.
So why not now? If he just kept going, kept trying, kept hoping, it had to happen. If it had to happen sometime, maybe it’d be this time.
Maybe this time he’d win.
