“Please,” pleaded Will, as he and Allan made their way along the road to Clun, “You’ll know exactly what to say, or if they’re trying to trick me into paying too much. Please!”
Allan shook his head, looking straight ahead to avoid having to make eye contact. Will could twist him round his finger without even trying. At times like this looking at the boy reminded him of his late brother Tom; perhaps he hoped in some way to correct past wrongs by doing what a brother should for Will. “Look mate,” he replied, “I know I’m older than you, so you realise I know more of the ways of the world than you do, but I really don’t think I’m the one to ‘elp you with this. I mean, I don’t usually ‘ave to pay, you see. If you want to know about ‘ow to get a beauty without a penny passing ‘ands, I’m your man.”
Will thought for a moment, before replying. “Maybe, when I’ve got a bit more experience myself, I’ll try it your way, but right now I think it’s better if I pay. But if you won’t help me, I’ll never get that experience will I?”
“You ain’t gonna stop until I ‘elp you with this, are you?”, asked Allan, already certain of the answer.
“You’ll do it then?”, asked Will in reply. Allan nodded. “Great,” replied the young carpenter, “I know what I want. She’s at the cottage at the far end of the town.”

Allan stood back, taking in every little detail of the house whose door Will was now knocking on. You could tell a lot about people by the quality of the house they lived in. A lack of care here would translate to everything the owners had or did. Fortunately the place was in good repair, and looked clean and tidy. It was important that everything was right for a boy’s first time. If not, he might be scared off for years, and that would be no good for anyone. When the door opened, a stout man filled the opening. “Hello sir,” said Will nervously, “I’ve brought a friend with me, to show me what to do, and what to look out for, if that’s all right with you.”
The man raised an eyebrow. “I don’t usually expect a young man to bring a companion with him,” he said matter-of-factly, “and you’ll have to promise me that you’ll take it in turns or you’ll overwhelm her. Having said that, I suppose, given your age, and the amount of money you’ll be handing over, it’ll be all right, just this once. You’d best go round the back though, I don’t want the neighbours seeing.”
He closed the door, directing Will to the back of the cottage. “He seems a bit nervous,” he said, once Will was out of earshot.
“Only to be expected” replied Allan with a wide grin, “After all, it’s not every day a lad buys his first ‘orse, is it?”
