Joe in The Empire

I saw Joe in The Empire last night. Superb performance! Since I live in the States, I've never seen him in anything except Robin Hood, so it was really nice to see him in another role. The Jerrod Theatre is part of the Royal Court Theatre - it's up on the 4th floor and quite small, seating 85. I was in the 3rd row, center. (His eyes are gorgeous from 6 feet away.) There's no real stage - just the front of the room which was designed to look like a bullet-ridden house in Afghanistan with a rock, dirt and sand floor and real dust/dirt floating around the room! Sounds of war regularly filtered into the house - orders being shouted, guns, helicopters. It's an intense drama - torture, prejudice, death - and Joe makes you feel every emotion.

'Course, another very cool thing was seeing Joe outside the theatre. I arrived a bit early and was trying to figure out where I might get a bite to eat for dinner. I wasn't paying close enough attention when from the corner of my eye I noticed someone walking past. He was already past me when I realized it was Joe headed into the theatre!! Not out of it but in!  Darn. I was too shy to call out his name. Where is wastingyourgum  when you need her!! ;)

But I decided to hang around after the play and sure enough - Joe finally came out! What a nice guy! I told him I was from Kansas, really enjoyed seeing him the play, loved Robin Hood - he signed my program, asked what else I was doing in the UK. Lovely short little chat. (Oh - his eyes are quite nice from 1-2 feet away, too!) And then I took the pic! Unfortunately there wasn't another soul around so I didn't get one with him. But that's okay.
