Allan had loved the Trip to Jerusalem Inn. He had found the public house almost immediately upon arriving in Nottingham and it had become a “home away from home.” Or, rather, more like “home” in his case, having no proper bed to call his own.

He had spent most of his nights at the inn before joining the gang and becoming an outlaw. He had friends here, and more importantly, lady friends. Blondes, brunettes, an occasional red-head…he loved them all. Nothing serious, though. He would come, have a pint or two with his new mates, see which of the girls was free that evening, play a few card games or host a “game of chance” or two. He never took too much from anyone and it was all in good sport. The Trip was where he went to enjoy himself, not take advantage.

Now, he waited in a back store room - a place that held fond memories - waiting for someone he did not particularly want to meet. The Trip had been chosen as a meeting place for several reasons - proximity, familiarity, and, at least for Allan, it had been a place where he felt safe.

He did not feel safe tonight. He felt trapped. Trapped into making a deal he did not want. Trapped into working with someone he did not trust. He was trapped between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

It was not worth it, he thought. It would be better to just fess up to the gang. He doubted that Sir Guy would be true to his word about payment anyway. Plus, he had never specified an amount, probably was close to nothing. Allan had decided to leave and was about to return to the gang when the door opened.

“Leaving so soon?”

Trapped! At that moment, Allan realized he had made a huge mistake. He much preferred short, drunk, and sassy to tall, dark and handsome. It was not a good night at the pub at all.
