Birds are such vain creatures. I routinely argue with the local bluejays that the ribbons I put in the oaks are not for them to yank off, especially when I provide them with more than enough natural nesting material.
I've noticed there's a distinct pecking order in my backyard. The doves and pigeons co-habitate quite nicely, but fly off when the black birds and these little brown finch-like things come in. They are in turn chased off by the blue jays, who carry on as if they own my birdfeeder and my oak trees. They seem to think they rule the roost, but they can't compete with the green parrots that come screeching in and cause such a racket even the jays can't take it. Finally, we have a red-headed woodpecker that comes every summer and he frightens them all off with his sheer size.
