[It's silence. A little bit of water splishing. Then singing. It sounds something like this.]

Hatred enfolds us...inculcates the minds with its heresy.

Laymen enfold us...clemency arrives to set you free.

Fair Rosanna, your vagrancy's a familiar tale...

[The voice is coming from somewhere around the dragon's prow but there's no sign of anyone popping up from the high tide. Yet.]

We're always here.

[Splash! Come out farther to these rocks over here, Mr. Potter. There's a smooth ledge just waiting for you to sit on it. See, there are even wet hand prints on it.]

[Caspian really needs Lucy for this sort of seduction only because he pegs the stranger for a red-haired young lady type. No matter.]

Is that how all young men of your ilk say hello?

[By asking questions first, taking names later. Like Peter Pevensie. Silently Caspian crests through the water then breeches to rest his arms on the ledge. His tail's staying under the surface.]

How was it cryptic, sir? A question was asked, and an answer given. I speak for the sea.

[Caspian's talking with his hands too, waving his fingers this way then that way.]

I live in it, I breathe it, how could I not? The fishes are my allies.

[You watch your mouth, whippersnapper. And just on a whim Caspian flicks water at Harry using a brief flash of his tail.]

There's one now.

[Look, Mr. Potter, you try being made a merman when you normally have two very fine walking legs. Caspian chortles at the young man's reaction.]

What did they look like? I have never immersed myself in fresher waters.

[Were they uglier? Meaner? Less royal? Clearly someone here thinks the saltwater kin are far superior.]

[Caspian was a seal once. Twice. But that's probably not the same experience at all. When Harry tells him about the yellow eyes and gray skin he silently balks.]

They sound like hags.

[Not colloquially speaking, he's actually met a hag or two. Very nasty beasts. Witch-raising beasts.]

Why? What are they capable of?

[Caspian's genuinely curious. He'll have to tell Lucy and the others in case these gray-skinned yellow-eyed gilled and what not people try to invade their waters. Caspian's good at defensive measures, he beats up giants on holidays.]

And ocean merfolk are like me, at least those I've met. We don't come in shades of gray.

[One day they might have a conversation about this, "Remember that one time you thought you were born a fish?" "Remember that one time you forgot you were born a prat?" At least Harry is no Eustace Scrubb.]
