In point of fact, the BAYONET was the weapon most relied on. Soldiers would fire one or two volleys, depending on how close the enemy were, then charge with the bayonet.
ACTUAL range of a musket was quite a distance, if the bullet didn’t hit anything. EFFECTIVE range was about 50 to 75 yards(there are people who will say it was greater, but that required tighter bullet/patch combination than was normally used. The main reason for smoothbores was speed of loading, not accuracy.
